Agree on the main point – Pax Nucleus might have been caused by the fact that only a few actors had bombs, keeping each other in check. If we had an open source war during the cuba crisis, how would Khruschev have been able to save face when all of internet is ridiculing him?
The problem is also that not just citizens but also politicians today are twitter maximalists - they only optimize their popularity on twitter. So there are no adults in the room, because going against the twitter mob is reputationally expensive.
On the other hand, there are a few dampening functions - 1) the pain at the gas pump leads to de-escalation, 2) podcasting and Substack etc. incentivize other views, 3) web3 social networks and cryptoeconomy might align incentives, create a better information supply chain and information diet, and reduce the cancel culture.
Love the "Gov is dead" line!
